Brief information/history of Conference United Methodist Young Adult Fellowship
Brief History of CUMYAF
The young Adult Fellowship, a conglomeration of young people ages >24 to 35 years was established in January 1985, following the separation of the Youths from the Young Adults by the Liberia Annual Conference in 1984. The separation was effected at the 51st Annual Session of the LAC/UMC held in Yekepa, Nimba County from February 6-12, 1994.
Among many reasons for the separation from the United Methodist Youths (ages 12 – 24), the Young Adults are mostly career fellows serving in church and society with vast experiences, abilities, and skills to deliberate issues affecting the church and society. Therefore, the United Methodist Church believes that those experienced young people cannot be mixed with youths (ages 12 – 24) in one organization. Thus, the Conference United Methodist Young Adult Fellowship (CUMYAF) was created.
The YAF was established and is maintained perpetually for Young United Methodists between the ages 19-35 years irrespective of sex, race, social or economic status. The purpose of the fellowship is to proclaim the gospel of Christ through witnessing, worshiping, studying, fellowshipping, and serving mankind and the church. We are located in all counties in Liberia and the Republic of Guinea Forest Area and form a majority of the over 350,000 United Methodists in Liberia Annual Conference.
The Young Adult Fellowship emblem contains a circle that is symbolic of the UMC (convectional nature. The pointed star depicts the five fruits of the spirit, Radian (ray) reflection (star) seen by the wise man at Christ’s birth, and the fire cross signifying the presence and burning of the Holy Spirit in us.
